State Senator Lydia Edwards
Lydia Edwards. A woman full of courage, class, and joy. As the daughter of a military mother, Edwards has traveled the world — but no other place made her feel as at home as East Boston did. At the start of her career, Edwards worked as a public interest attorney with Greater Boston Area Legal Services. Her focus was on labor issues which included things like fair treatment of all domestic workers and combating human trafficking. She took this focus with her as she was elected to Boston City Council in 2017 and assumed office in 2018. While serving as a councilor, she started zeroing in on housing policy. Edwards helped lead efforts that resulted in over $2 million appropriated for affordable housing in Boston. In addition, She cares deeply for climate change and environmental protection. She has worked tirelessly to push regulation to better the environment of not only Boston, but the Commonwealth as well. She has done things such as helping protect her constituents in East Boston from airport pollution and addressing citywide traffic congestion. In 2022, Edwards was elected to the role of State Senator for the 3rd Suffolk district, becoming the first woman and person of color to represent this area. She was also appointed as a chairperson of the Joint Committee on Housing and the Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary. Although her job title has changed throughout the years, her values and goals have never. Edwards continues to work and fight for change, making sure her voice represents that of the vulnerable. She wants to create a Boston that values and works for every constituent and she is doing a phenomenal job at it.
