State Representative Brandy Fluker Oakley ’01
Brandy Fluker Oakley was born and raised in Boston by a mother who grew up in the segregated South. She has always had a profound interest in justice and advocacy. At just 8 years old, Fluker Oakley organized her first ever protest. Once she entered Boston Latin School, her interest for public service only grew stronger and led her to Syracuse College where she graduated with a Bachelors in both social work and public policy, later going on to earn her master’s degree from John Hopkins and Law degree from Emory College. While working as a public defender at CPCS in the Boston municipal courts, she was exposed to the injustice that people face against the criminal justice system. This pivotal moment launched her career into the public sector where she then worked as a Director for many non-profits. This work cemented her belief that local and state government has some of the largest effects on every part of our everyday lives. In 2020, Fluker Oakley decided to run as representative for the 12th Suffolk after her predecessor resigned in the wake of the pandemic. Fluker Oakley now represents the vibrant communities of Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, and Milton in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives. She serves on the Transportation Committee, The Judiciary Committee, Community Development & Small Business Committee, and the Racial Equity, Civil Rights & Inclusion Committee. Despite the challenges of being a progressive Democrat in the house, Fluker Oakley works hard every day to serve her district.
