Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro

Although he is only 10 months into his 5 year tenure as the Inspector General of Massachusetts, Jeffrey Shapiro is no stranger to public service. Shapiro started his career under Attorney General Scott Harshbarger over 25 years ago and has always loved serving the people of Massachusetts. His time at the Attorney General’s office fueled his passion for public service and solidified his determination to make a difference in the lives of the citizens he served. After working in the Attorney General’s office, Shapiro worked in the Comptroller’s office where he managed the state’s finances while also pioneering efforts in mitigating cybersecurity risks and protecting personal information. This gave him the financial management experience in the public sector that was crucial for him to become a candidate for the Inspector General. When Shapiro was appointed as Inspector General, he hit the ground running by restructuring the Inspector General’s office and establishing new divisions such as the Healthcare unit that specializes in healthcare fraud. Overseeing 351 cities and towns with over $200 billion of funds is no small ordeal, but Shapiro has been able to take on the challenge. In his own words: “I don’t work for any [single person]. I work for the people of Massachusetts.” He truly loves the work that he does and brings positivity to everyone in the workplace.
