Inspector General Jeff Shapiro
Since his appointment in October 2022, Inspector General Jeffrey S. Shapiro has made it his mission to make sure that all $120 billion dollars in municipal and state spending are not misused or wasted. During his time in the role, he has added several new divisions to the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) in order to review and maintain the agency’s performance. He also led successful investigations on Boston Public Schools, former State Police Troopers, and the MBTA.
Shapiro graduated from Needham High School before earning his Bachelor of Arts in Government from Brandeis University, and his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School. Since earning his law degree, Shapiro has dedicated his entire 27-year career to public service. He has served the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in multiple capacities, at the Office of the Attorney General, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, and the Office of the Comptroller. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar where he embodies its mission by promoting the administration of justice, legal education, professional excellence, and respect for the law.
Throughout his career, Shapiro has put repeated emphasis on collaboration. He constantly meets and connects with state and local officials so that they know that the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is a trustworthy resource if they ever need help. He also makes regular announcements about the OIG’s achievements regularly to show their reliability to the public. At the office, Shapiro makes sure to greet everyone warmly to create a comfortable office environment that makes both new and experienced employees feel welcome.
