Andrew Zheng is a rising senior at Boston Latin School. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts but moved to Boston after fifth grade, and he has lived there ever since.
At BLS, Andrew is the Vice President of the Origami Club and a Head Copy Editor for the school newspaper, the Argo. Andrew also curates and organizes an annual art exhibition at the Central Library at Copley Square for both local and international students. Any student can submit their own artwork that pertains to specific themes that Andrew assigns to each exhibition that relate to current world events. For example, the themes Andrew chose for 2022’s exhibition were Health, Community, and Family because of the COVID-19 pandemic. By using these themes, Andrew helps students reflect about the world around them through their passion and work.
Organizing these art exhibitions has shown Andrew the importance of providing an avenue for every artist who wishes to share their work. From photographs to clay sculptures, from students ranging from five to 17 years old from all across the world, Andrew has seen how different people view important world events that have huge impacts on their lives. Andrew thinks that it is vital for the youth to be able to show how they feel about these topics without judgment as he believes that the next generation are the bringers of societal change. He hopes to continue organizing these exhibitions to continue helping student artists impact people’s lives. Through Ward, Andrew hopes to meet many people in the public service sector and learn how their day-to-day duties affect people’s lives. He also wants to learn how to better serve his community on a larger scale by seeing how the government works behind the scenes.
