The Honorable Judge Roanne Sragow has had a long and distinguished
career
inpublic service. She currently serves as the First Justice of the
Cambridge District Court. A recipient of the Mass Judges Conference
2000
President's Award, Judge Sragow has held numerous positions serving
the
Commonwealth, inactivities as diverse as a partner in a private law
firm
of Kerry and Sragow, toacting on a committee for the Facing History
and
Ourselves program, to leading a"media mision" to Israel. Judge
Sragow is
extensively involved in hercommunity, and her impressive resume makes
it
clear that she greatly valuespublic service.
Judge Sragow grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. She attended public
highschool and then made her way to Tufts University. She graduated
in
1972 with a B.A. in Political Science and then went on to Boston College
Law School. Shegraduated from Law School in 1975, and worked in the
Appellate Division of theMiddlesez County DA's office as an Assistant
District Attorney from 1975 until1976. In 1976 she became Senior Trial
Attorney in the Major Violator s Unit,and from 1979 until 1983 Judge
Sragow acted as a partner in the law firm ofKerry & Sragow in general
practice with an emphasis on civil and criminallitigation. In 1983 until
1990, Judge Sragow became a partner in the firm ofLack & Sragow,
which
would be her last position as a private attorney. In 1990,Governor Michael
Dukakis appointed her as a Circuit Justice of the DistrictCourt. In
1993,
Chief Justice of the District Court Samuel Zoll appointed JudgeSragow
as
the Regional Administrative Justice for Region III of the DistrictCourt
Department. In 1998, Judge Zoll appointed her as the First Justice of
theCambridge District Court, saying, "She [Judge Sragow] has shown
that
shepossesses the attributes that are important in a Judge: good judgment,
knowledgeof the law, dignity, and humility. In addition, she has
demonstrated theinitiative, imagination, energy, and leadership that
are
necessary for theeffective administration of a large enterprise...the
community at large... will benefitfrom Judge Sragow's enlightened
leadership."
As impressive as her career is, Judge Sragow has also found the time
to be
anactive participant in her community. One particularly interesting
endeavorthat Judge Sragow has undertaken was a "media" mission
to Israel.
Judge Sragow,along with Judge Mark Wolf and a Boston businessman named
Arthur Ulion, led atrip to Israel for members of the media who were
reporting on the Middle Eastbut had never been there. The trip was
sponsored by the Jewish CommunityCouncil of Combined Jewish Philanthropies
and was intended to provide a balancedand educational trip to the Middle
East. While there, participants were engagedin dialogues with both the
Israeli Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, aswell as prominent
Palestinians. Judge Sragow has served on the Board ofDirectors of the
Commonwealth Literacy Campaign, which works to increase adult
literacythroughout the Commonwealth. She was also a participant and
moderator of the first "Jews and Christians in Dialogue Colloqium,"
which
was a conference heldin Krakow, Poland, and attended by Jewish and
Christian scholars from aroundthe world.
Judge Sragow has also worked on the Attorney General's Drug
ReductionInitiative and the Subcommittee on Law Enforcement and the
Courts. Other membersof the subcommittee included then-US Attorney Wayne
Budd, Chief Justice SamuelZoll, and Chiefs of Police Association. The
subcommittee worked to review theCommonwealth's experience with first
and
second drug offenders, formulate aproposal for the first and second
offenders drug programs, and, mostimportantly, formulate a response
to the
challenge of the increase in criminal drug crimesby law enforcement
and
the courts.
Judge Sragow is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the
Massachusetts Bar Foundation, and the National Association of Women
Judges. She has served as a guest lecturer in Trial Advocacy at the
Boston
College and Harvardlaw schools, and to critique mock Superior Court
trials
at Suffolk University LawSchool. She has been a guest lecturer on Ethical
Responsibility at BostonCollege and Northeastern law schools, and served
as a Faculty Advisor for theTrial Advocacy Workshop at Harvard Law School
for seven years. Judge Sragow hasserved as vice president and chairperson
of the Executive Board in theMassachusetts Judges Conference. She is
also
the proud mother of Jaclyn, aged 9,and Jacob, who will soon be turning
four.
Judge Sragow's extensive involvement in and dedication to her
communityembody the spirit of the Ward Fellowship. Her enthusiasm and
openness make heran excellent sponsor. She was a sponsor for the Ward
Fellowship in 1998 and hasdecided to continue the experience this year.
